Swans endure injury woe in season-opening loss to Brisbane

Young gun Logan McDonald stretchered off in last quarter

Star ruckman Tom Hickey misses match due to calf tightness

The Sydney Swans have suffered a double injury blow in their season-opening 22-point loss to the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

Young gun Logan McDonald was stretchered off in the last quarter with a suspected ankle injury, while star ruckman Tom Hickey missed the match due to calf tightness.

The Swans also lost Jake Lloyd to a concussion in the first quarter, leaving them with just one fit player on the bench for the majority of the match.

Despite the setbacks, the Swans fought valiantly and were in the contest until the final siren. Lance Franklin kicked three goals, while Callum Mills was outstanding with 35 disposals and 10 clearances.

But the Lions were too strong in the end, with Lachie Neale best on ground with 36 disposals and 10 clearances. Joe Daniher also impressed with three goals.

Swans coach John Longmire said after the match that the injuries were a concern, but he was proud of the way his team fought.

"We had a lot of young players out there today and they showed a lot of courage and determination," Longmire said.

"We're going to have to assess the injuries and see how we go next week, but I'm confident we can bounce back from this."

The Swans will host the Western Bulldogs at the SCG next Saturday night.
