Two Meteor Showers To Peak This Week

Two Meteor Showers to Peak This Week

Southern Delta Aquarids and Alpha Capricornids

Active Dates and Peak

The Southern Delta Aquarids are active from July 12 to August 22, while the Alpha Capricornids are active from July 3 to August 15. Both showers are expected to peak on July 31.

While neither shower ranks among the best of the year, their combined activity can create a moderately active meteor display. The meteors from the Southern Delta Aquarids appear to radiate from the constellation Aquarius, while those from the Alpha Capricornids radiate from Capricorn.

In addition to these two showers, the northern part of the sky may also reveal the sporadic Perseid meteors, known for their speed and brightness. However, these will not be as prominent as the Southern Delta Aquarids or Alpha Capricornids.

Observers have the best chance of spotting meteors after midnight, when the sky is darkest. Find an open area with a clear view of the sky, and lie down on your back to maximize your field of view.

On July 30th, we will have a unique opportunity to witness the combined peak of these two meteor showers. With a potential for high-speed meteors and radiant fireballs, this celestial event is not to be missed.
