Overview
El Salvador, officially known as the Republic of El Salvador, is a country located in Central America. It is bordered by Honduras to the northeast and Guatemala to the northwest.
El Salvador is the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. It is a highly industrialized country and the most densely populated state on the mainland of the Americas.
History
El Salvador gained independence from Spain in 1821 and became part of the United States of Central America. The union dissolved in 1841, and El Salvador became an independent republic.
El Salvador experienced a 12-year civil war from 1980 to 1992. The war, which cost about 75,000 lives, ended with a peace treaty signed by the government and leftist rebels.
Economy
El Salvador's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The country's main agricultural products include coffee, sugar, and cotton. El Salvador is also a major producer of textiles, clothing, and footwear.
Culture
El Salvador's culture is a blend of Mayan and Spanish influences. The country's cuisine is known for its use of corn, beans, and rice. El Salvador is also home to a number of ancient Mayan ruins.
