Overview

El Salvador, officially known as the Republic of El Salvador, is a country located in Central America. It is bordered by Honduras to the northeast and Guatemala to the northwest.

History

El Salvador gained independence from Spain in 1821 and became part of the United States of Central America. The union dissolved in 1841, and El Salvador became an independent republic.

El Salvador experienced a 12-year civil war from 1980 to 1992. The war, which cost about 75,000 lives, ended with a peace treaty signed by the government and leftist rebels.
