Florida Communism Bill

DeSantis Signs Bill Requiring Teaching of Communism History in Florida Schools

Governor Emphasizes Importance of Understanding Communism's Dangers

Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill into law that mandates the teaching of communism history in Florida schools. The measure, which was signed on July 1, 2023, aims to educate students about the dangers and ideologies of communist regimes.

Florida Education Commissioner: Communism Education Vital

Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. emphasized the importance of communism education for students. "It is vitally important that every student learns about the dangers of communism," said Diaz. "This bill ensures that our students will have a thorough understanding of the evils of this ideology and its devastating consequences for individuals and societies."

Communism History Museum to be Established

The bill also mandates the Florida Department of State to coordinate with the Florida Department of Education in establishing a Florida-based museum on the history of communism. The museum will showcase exhibits, artifacts, and educational resources to further enhance students' understanding of the topic.

Lessons Added to School Curriculum

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, lessons on communism history will be added to required instruction in public schools. These lessons will focus on the ideology, history, and impact of communist regimes around the world. The curriculum will also include discussions on the dangers of totalitarianism and the importance of individual liberty and free markets.

This bill aligns with Governor DeSantis's commitment to ensuring that Florida students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for success in the 21st century. By requiring the teaching of communism history, Florida schools will empower students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
